David is part of the team behind Sanergy, which provides scalable, sustainable sanitation for millions of slum dwellers in Kenya. Sanergy builds networks of low-cost sanitation centers, collects the waste from these centers and converts it into electricity and fertilizer that is sold to wholesale markets. Through its for-profit market based model, Sanergy not only provides affordable sanitation to slum dwellers, but supplies electricity and fertilizer in markets where they are desperately needed.
Initially brought to Nairobi through a Legatum Seed Grant in the winter of 2010, David and his team completed a feasibility study, built strong partnerships on the ground and engaged local stakeholders as well as slum residents in the design of the project. Prior to launching this project, David gained significant international and entrepreneurial experience. He served as a Teaching Fellow for the Yale-China Association in Changsha, China and then went on to work at the Clinton Global Initiative where he worked on building public-private partnerships committed to poverty alleviation. His subsequent experience at Endeavor, a non-profit that supports entrepreneurs in developing countries, further expanded his network of leading foundations and organizations and honed his focus on a system-based approach to entrepreneurship. David has a BA in American Studies from Yale University and is currently pursuing an MBA from the Sloan School of Management.
