The Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship at MIT was founded on the belief that entrepreneurs and their market-driven solutions are critical to advancing economic and social progress.

The Center runs a series of programs including:

  • The Student Fellowship, which is a competitive program designed to help aspiring student entrepreneurs maximize their likelihood of success as principled, impactful leaders in global growth markets.
  • The Foundry Fellowship, a first-of-its-kind fellowship for Africa-based founders who have scaled innovation- driven companies and find themselves at an inflection point in their entrepreneurial journey. The Fellowship brings Fellows together to consider their present and future leadership roles as entrepreneurs, investors, policy influencers and thought leaders building entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems.
  • And off campus education programs that are designed to expose growth market innovators to MIT expertise and frameworks on innovation ecosystems.

The Center has supported over 450 entrepreneurs since 2007. Explore the map to learn more.
  • The fellowship has expanded my experience of entrepreneurship as a community of ideators that I now feel a part of and have a stake in. I did not anticipate the fluidity and openness which has allowed me to delve into exploring self-diagnosing mobile tech for mental health, alongside my original project that centers on developing a higher ed platform for STEM in the Arts.

    - Sarah Rifky, Legatum Student Fellow 2020-21

  • The Foundry Fellowship came at just the right time for me. I was at a crossroads in terms of what I wanted to do next after exiting my company. I met my co-founder for my next big venture here. The impact for me has been immense, it is more than I expected, I have the confidence to go out there, implement my ideas and the tools to move things forward. I’m grateful to the Legatum Center Team.

    - Clarisse Iribagiza, Co-Founder, DeepTechAfrica Legatum Foundry Fellow 2021-22

  • MCI has changed my perspective and approach towards business. My biggest take away and motivation was the fact that I am a nation builder! It’s easy to lose courage and momentum when it gets hard but knowing that I am building what I am building for this country makes it all worth it!

    - Joel Endatimana, Entrepreneur from Rwanda participant in the MCI Bootcamp
