“I was born in Kerala, India. Growing up I was appalled to notice the disparity in care available to the haves and the have nots . . . Establishing a process for recording [medical] data electronically and maintaining [medical] records will improve India’s ability to rack disease progression [and] aid in dispensing standard care to villagers.”
Arjun will capitalize on the unmet need for a public health information system in India to close the gap in the disparity of medical services available across classes. In India, Primary Health Centers (PHCs), the first point contact for medical care in villages, do not have the means to keep electronic medical records. Without electronic medical records, it is impossible to track disease patterns on a large scale, and individual patient treatment cannot be monitored for longer than five years as paper records deteriorate over time. Having held the positions of software developer at Siemens Information Systems Ltd. in India and software and R&D engineer at Seimens Medical Solutions in the US, Arjun possesses a wealth of knowledge in this field. He has developed information systems that enable digital imaging and communication in medicine and has worked with local hospitals in India to computerize their programs. Arjun’s experience in a developing economy has equipped him with knowledge about the challenges of running a business in such an environment. Arjun holds an MS in biomedical engineering from Duke University and a BE in computer science and engineering from Kerala University, India, where he was ranked among the top five students in his class.
