“I think that rather than waiting to have a ‘perfect’ business environment, young people should work on creating it; change the local policy and the mindset will certainly follow.”
As of today, there are very few local online platforms that are capable of delivering content that engages North Africa’s young, internet-savvy population. Laila’s project will create a user generated local news and social networking web site serving this region, where internet adoption has increased 100% over the past two years. By providing content more relevant than non-local websites and relying on an online advertising business model, this promises to create new opportunities both for peer-to-peer communication and for businesses to reach target audiences.
Laila was born and raised in Morocco and, after finishing graduate studies in Paris, was determined to actively participate in the development of her home country. Convinced that poverty alleviation and economic emergence cannot be achieved without a strong entrepreneurial dynamic, she joined a management-consulting firm and worked on projects designed to enhance the critical yet under-utilized role of small businesses in Morocco. Afterwards, she joined a smaller firm as it tripled its number of employees and expanded its telecom and media market analysis services across four continents.
