Alumni
Legatum Fellow
From:
Costa Rica
Sector:
Financial Services
Location:
Mexico

Marvin’s venture changes the credit landscape by combing big data and machine learning with the traditional factoring model to provide working capital to more than 100,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Mexico. By analyzing the strength of the relationship between the seller and the buyer, Marvin’s finance enterprise offers short-term credit to SMEs based on accounts receivable. This financing model provides better interest rates and access to credit for SMEs that support 6 million jobs in the 10 states of Mexico where the venture operates.

Born and raised in Costa Rica, Marvin has been living in Mexico for the last 10 years. With several years of experience in financial services, Marvin has observed the challenges that SMEs face in accessing short-term capital. Big data and technology are part of the solution for this financial inclusion challenge.

Before coming to MIT, Marvin was Director of Product Management for Electronic Channels at one of the largest banks in Mexico. He led the transformation of the online and ATM channels and developed and launched the mobile banking service and became a thought leader in the field of customer facing technologies. He also has management consulting and entrepreneurial experience.

Marvin holds a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. He is an MBA candidate at the Sloan School of Management.
