Advancing the Quest for Uninterrupted Access (AQUA) develops technology that ensures sustainable and reliable access to safe water in low-income countries. For the last three years, AQUA has been operating a water station in rural Tanzania that makes treated water available to 200 local residents. Juhyun is currently designing a desalination technology for water stations in coastal communities where population densities are higher. With traditional and novel water treatment technologies, AQUA offers a sustainable supply of both clean water and community-driven business opportunities.

Shock electro-dialysis, a novel water desalination technology, is at the center of Juhyun’s doctoral research. The technology has the potential to improve household livelihoods and health outcomes in communities where there are high barriers to accessing safe water. By scaling this technology for low-income markets, Juhyun is introducing a system for delivering an essential good in the absence of reliable transportation and water treatment infrastructures.

Before beginning his doctoral studies at MIT, Juhyun held positions at BMW, Morgan Stanley, Saudi-Aramco, and Samsung. During his recent appointment at Samsung as a Project Manager and Senior Engineer, he successfully developed and optimized chemical processes for the production of various materials, including quantum dots, organic light-emitting materials, and engineered plastic polymers.

Juhyun holds a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University and a Master’s in Chemical Engineering Practice from MIT. He is a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering and an MBA candidate at the Sloan School of Management.
