Alumni
Legatum Fellow
From:
India
Sector:
Energy/Utilities
Location:
India
Degree:
MBA, Sloan School of Management

Janak Raguraman hopes to establish a for-profit enterprise that provides electricity to the hundreds of millions in India who currently live without its benefits. His business plan involves developing a hybrid distributed generation system, a grid-adaptable energy storage device and smart metering technology. These products and services will dramatically reduce electricity costs and barriers to entry for India’s poor.

Before coming to MIT, Janak worked at a global energy company where he developed innovative strategies to reduce life-cycle costs at utility power plants around the world. An avid entrepreneur working in sustainability solutions, he has explored over forty innovative concepts to develop and implement projects, from an energy self-sufficient Green Orphanage to a low-cost windmill designed to pump water.

Janak is enrolled at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He received a BS from Nirma Institute of Technology (India) and an MS from Purdue University, both in Mechanical Engineering.
