Daniel Heyman’s company, Bureh, is partnering with craftsmen in Sierra Leone to produce bright, colorful belts using traditional and recycled metals, for the US and UK markets. Bureh successfully crowd-funded its initial production, grew supply chains, and sold hundreds of pieces from the ethnically conscious line. To work towards scaling the business, they have targeted retail distribution in the US, worked to strengthen the brand’s editorial presence, and have reinforced the supply chain in Sierre Leone.
Daniel has a considerable amount of experience in Sierra Leone, having worked at MIT’s Jameel Poverty Action Lab (JPAL) and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), where he was based in Freetown. His work involved the design, piloting and rollout of a new micro-credit product targeting rural markets. He later transferred to JPAL/IPA’s home base in Cambridge, MA where he worked on a variety of projects focusing on the applications and adoptions of new technology, including a program with Angaza Design that looks to understand the implications of mobile technology and mobile banking on the distribution of solar energy solutions.
Daniel is an MBA candidate at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He previously attended Columbia University, where he majored in Economics and Mathematics.
