Ashaya Basnyat’s business, Tamasha is a vertically integrated apparel company that produces ready-to-wear funky knits made from eco-friendly yarns in Nepal. The inspiration behind the label was Nepal’s beautiful cashmere yarns, the high rate of unemployment among Nepali women, and increasing consumer interest in sustainable apparel. Originally from Nepal, Ashaya is a fine arts enthusiast who has been inspired by traditional and eclectic arts she has come across in her travels. In addition to providing employment to women, Ashaya seeks to expand Tamasha’s product line by including textiles ethically sourced from artisan communities throughout Central and South Asia.

After receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, Ashaya worked at a global technical consulting firm and later joined the World Bank’s Sustainable Energy practice in 2010. At the World Bank, Ashaya worked with the Clean Technology and Scaling-up Renewable Energy Funds to scale up the deployment of renewable energy solutions and expand renewable markets in developing countries.

Ashaya is currently an MBA candidate at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
